Steve Owens is an abstract painter based in Pennsylvania, whose work explores the emotional resonance of landscape through memory and light. Working primarily in acrylics with a growing oil practice, Owens creates vibrant abstractions that capture not what places look like, but how they feel and how memory transforms our experience of them over time.

Owens came to painting seriously in 2024, reconnecting with a childhood love of artmaking as a way to explore his inner life. His professional background as a chemist in the materials industry informs his thoughtful approach to studio practice. He is starting to transition toward oil painting, using no solvents, to create a less toxic working environment, eliminating both plastics and solvents from his process.

Drawing from photographs and memory of places he has visited, Owens works across scales but gravitates toward large canvases where he can fully investigate the interplay of light, space, and color. His "Fractured Landscape" series examines how memory fragments and reshapes our experience of place over time. Bright, saturated colors reflect the quality of sunlight on clear days, while his abstract approach offers freedom to express feeling rather than literal representation.

Owens has studied with abstract painter Josh Jensen, whose workshops have been formative to his developing practice. His work was featured in the 2025 Fresh A.I.R. Festival in Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania. He maintains an active studio practice alongside his professional work, viewing artmaking as essential to understanding himself and the world around him.
